Napoleon’s Engagement Ring to Josephine

In 1796, Napoleon Bonaparte gave his future wife, Josephine, this stunning gold engagement ring with two pear shaped stones, one diamond, one blue sapphire, each weighing approximately 1 carat. It sold for almost $950,000 at a recent auction celebrating Josephine’s 250th birthday, when it was expected to fetch approxmiately $20,000.

Royal Engagement Rings: The Most Fabulous Royal Rings

Who isn’t fascinated with the lavish (and sometimes scandalous) lives of the Royals family? There is nothing more fabulous than a royal engagement and a fairytale wedding to ooh and aah over and we’ve got a roundup of our favorite royal engagement rings – from the classic Grace Kelly and Princess Diana to the latest breed of princess brides.

 

WALLIS SIMPSON, the twice divorced American, received this 19.77 carat emerald engagement ring from King Edward VIII in 1937, who famously gave up his crown to be with Simpson.

 

QUEEN ELIZABETH II was presented with this 3 carat diamond solitaire engagement ring from Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, which came from his mother’s tiara. They married in 1947.

 

GRACE KELLY‘s Cartier 10.47 carat emerald cut engagement ring from Prince Ranier III of Monaco is simply stunning, as was her 1956 fairytale wedding.

 

QUEEN BEATRIX of the Netherlands married German aristocrat Claus Von Amsberg in 1966, wearing this gorgeous solitaire engagement ring in a double halo setting.

 

PRINCESS MARGRETHE of Denmark wears one of our favorite royal rings – two six carat square cut diamonds set in yellow gold from Van Cleef and Arpels. She married french diplomat Count Henri de Laborde de Monpezat in 1967.

 

PRINCESS DIANA received this 18 carat oval sapphire surrounded by diamonds in 1981, when she married Charles, Prince of Wales.

 

SARAH FERGUSON‘s engagement ring from Prince Andrew, who she wed in 1986, was a fiery red Burmese ruby surrounded by diamonds from Garrards.

 

PRINCESS MATHILDE married Belgium’s heir apparent Prince Philippe in 1999. He proposed with a large oval cut ruby engagement ring.

 

SOPHIE RHYS JONES received this beautiful 2 carat oval cut diamond with heart shaped side stones from Garrards when she married Prince Edward (the youngest son of Queen Elizabeth II) in 1999.

 

PRINCESS MAXIMA, originally from Argentina, married Prince Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands in 2002. She received a very unique engagement ring – an orange oval shaped diamond flanked by two tear-drop shaped diamonds and set in two diamond encrusted bands.

 

MARY DONALDSON married Frederick, the Crown Prince of Denmark in 2004 and wears a massive 8 carat emerald cut diamond engagement ring with ruby side stones. Her Uffe Frank designed wedding dress is one of our absolute favorites.

 

PRINCESS LETIZIA married Prince Felipe of Spain (then, one of the most eligible bachelors) in 2004. Instead of a traditional engagement ring, she wears a large white gold and diamond eternity band.

 

CAMILLA PARKER BOWLES wears a massive eight carat emerald cut heirloom ring with three stair-stepped baguettes on each side. She married Prince Charles in 2005.

 

CROWN PRINCESS VICTORIA of Sweden married Daniel Westling (who was her personal trainer) in 2010 and wears this simple and elegant round brilliant diamond solitaire engagement ring set in white gold.

 

KATE MIDDLETON was famously presented with Princess Diana’s sapphire engagement ring when William proposed in 2009. Their 2010 wedding was one for the record books.

 

ZARA PHILLIPS, the eldest granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II, married rugby player Mike Tindall in 2011 and wears a diamond solitaire engagement ring set in a platinum pave band.

 

CHARLENE WITTSTOCK, a former South African olympic swimmer and now wife to Prince Albert II of Monaco (married in 2011), wears a simply exquisite 3 carat pear shaped diamond engagement ring embellished with round brilliant diamonds.

 

COUNTESS STEPHANIE DE LANNOY of Belgium became Princess Stephanie of Luxembourg in October of 2012 when she married Prince Guillaume. She wore a fabulous lace Elie Saab dress, which is almost as incredible as her 4 carat emerald cut engagement ring in a rectangular halo setting.

 

PRINCESS MADELINE of Sweden (younger sister of Victoria) recently announced her engagement to US-British boyfriend Christopher O’Neil.

 

TATIANA SANTO DOMINGO of Colombia is finally engaged to Andrea Casiraghi of Monaco (Princess Caroline’s son) after dating for seven years.

Jennifer Lopez & Her Diamonds

Jennifer Lopez has a lot of entries here on RingSpotters and now that she is dating dancer Casper Smart, the engagement rumors (naturally) are floating around. We personally don’t think she is engaged or planning on it, but she was photographed at Paris Fashion week sporting this very large diamond engagement ring on her left hand.

By the way, Jennifer – love the nails, love the purse and, of course, love the ring. Love Love Love.
